Responding to Home
10am - 5pm
“The title for this exhibition is drawn from observations about what the word home means in today’s highly mobile, often rootless society. The significance of “home” is simultaneously simple and complex. Is it where you were born? Or where you spent your childhood? Or is it where you live today? Or, the ultimate dilemma, where do you want your final resting place to be? The emotional index of the question is crucial to the examination of the cultural meanings of “home,” how it shapes our identity and the ways in which we comprehend the world around us.
Photography, of all the artistic mediums, serves this question the best simply because of its ability to record loss, absence, and desire. The photographers chosen for this group exhibition live in Georgia and yet most of them are not originally from here. The loci of their work is their perception of what “home” means to them, some engaging a multidisciplinary approach as a means of expression. Each artist sought their own visual language to interpret their personal story, a memory from everyday life and from lived experiences, even if in the present.”
