Genevieve: A Genevieve Arnold Retrospective
10am - 5pm
“Art was Genevieve Arnold’s life. Her paintings and drawings came from the depth of her belief that art could and would make a difference in the lives of all of us. They were very personal responses to her many travels, her life long experiences, and her keen intellect. These paintings and drawings live on after her death with the elegance and beauty that Genevieve, the woman and artist, epitomized.
It is with honor that The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia presents this Genevieve Arnold retrospective exhibition. She was one of our most respected and celebrated artists. This exhibition surveys nearly fifty years of drawing and painting. Through these decades her work and her conversations about art explored the most current in contemporary art issues.
Our heartfelt thanks go to The Forward Arts Foundation for major funding in support of this exhibition and catalogue. We are grateful also to our continuing sponsor, Travis Reed, for his support of this exhibition and to a new supporter of MOCA GA, The Mansion on Peachtree, for sponsoring the opening reception.
A warm thank you to Ms. Arnold’s niece, Natalie Ryan Gemmill, for so graciously opening the artist’s studio and lending works from the estate. Thank you to the many other lenders to this exhibition from here in Atlanta and around the country. Thank you to Lisa Thrower for her organizational efforts and a special thank you to Rebecca Dimling Cochran for curating this exhibition. Her time, dedication, and keen eye give us insight into Genevieve Arnold’s immense body of work. Thank you also to Susan Krane for her recent reflections on Ms. Arnold and her work and for giving permission to use the 1989 essay she wrote on the artist for the Southern Expressions: Points of View exhibition at the High Museum of Art.

Genevieve was a very dear friend of mine; I miss her every day and know first hand the void she has left in our hearts and in the Atlanta art community. Before her death, we had long conversations about this retrospective. She derived much pleasure from visualizing her paintings and drawings in the MOCA GA exhibition galleries – in her mind, she carefully placed each one. She was especially delighted that the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts was purchasing her work from this exhibition for their permanent collection in celebration of NMWA’s twentieth anniversary. For me, it is with much joy that MOCA GA offers Genevieve, a Genevieve Arnold Retrospective. This exhibition represents both MOCA GA’s and Genevieve’s first retrospective – for us, an honor as the presenting organization, and for her, a long deserved tribute.”
