The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) has completed a new of state-of-the-art museum facility that significantly expands its capacity to support artists, present contemporary art, and serve the community. Designed to meet the needs of a growing cultural community, the new building marks a major milestone in Atlanta’s contemporary art community.
Each element of the facility is designed to support ambitious exhibitions, long-term collection care, and sustained engagement with artists and audiences across Georgia.
A Collaborative Vision Realized
The new MOCA GA building is the result of an extended, deeply collaborative effort that brings together the foundational vision of Annette Cone-Skelton, President, CEO, Director, the architectural leadership of Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, and the commitment of funders. More than two decades in the making, this new facility will allow MOCA GA to fully realize its mission within a permanent home designed specifically for contemporary art.
Expanded Exhibition Spaces
The facility includes five galleries, providing greater flexibility and scale for exhibitions and programs. Two galleries are dedicated to the permanent collection, allowing for sustained presentation of works by artists connected to Georgia. A third gallery is reserved for the Working Artist Project (WAP), reinforcing MOCA GA’s long-standing investment in artist support. Additional gallery spaces accommodate rotating temporary exhibitions, alongside an archive and video room that supports research, media-based work, and the presentation of archival materials.
Museum-Quality Collection Storage
At the core of the new building is a state-of-the-art collection storage and archival environment. The storage area features thirty 20-foot-long x 10-foot-high art racks mounted on embedded tracks, enabling efficient lateral movement and future expansion as resources allow. Condensed shelving systems house archives and glazed works, while fully controlled temperature and humidity conditions ensure professional standards of conservation and long-term stewardship of the collection.
Supporting Growth and Sustainability
The new facility positions MOCA GA for sustained growth in attendance, membership, and visibility. An education and research room housing MOCA GA’s library will allow secure, monitored, hands-on access of archival collections to researchers. Event and rental spaces support expanded public use and new revenue opportunities, strengthening the museum’s financial foundation. Together, these changes allow MOCA GA to reinvest in more exhibitions, education, and artist-centered programming.
Investing in Atlanta’s Contemporary Art Ecosystem
As Atlanta continues to grow, MOCA GA plays a critical role in supporting the city’s artists and audiences. The new building strengthens the museum’s ability to function as both a cultural anchor and an active platform. For 25 years, MOCA GA has worked with care and intention to elevate contemporary art made in Georgia. The completion of this new facility represents a decisive step forward, ensuring that the museum can continue to serve artists and the public with greater impact.
