Jon Eric Riis: The Embellished Textile

Apr 23, 2005 - Jun 10, 2005
10am - 5pm

The Embellished Textile, a solo exhibition by Jon Eric Riis, was curated by Sandra Bowles, Executive Director of the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. and Editor-in-Chief of Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot. The exhibition explored the extraordinary talent of this contemporary tapestry artist from Georgia.

“Riis is simply one of the most talented artists working today,” stated MOCA GA President / CEO Annette Cone Skelton. “Featured in the 20 plus kimonos and wall hangings included in the exhibition are images of humans, frogs and winged figures.  These are major works from the last decade, many of which have never before been exhibited or even seen in Atlanta.”

Jon Eric Riis is an artist of extraordinary skill and intellect. For many years Jon researched historical textiles and related objects which became the inspiration for much of his work. His realistic subject matter seems almost alive on the picture plane because of his masterful ability to depict realistic detail in his tapestries. He employs subtle gradations of color to illustrate form and shading. After the tapestry is completed, Jon sometimes embellishes the surface with gold threads, seed pearls, crystal beads, leather and/or coral. Jon’s phenomenal skill as a draftsman along with his attention to every detail of the weaving structure has made him one of the most gifted and celebrated tapestry weavers working today.
