Artists of the Heath Gallery 1965 to 1998

Apr 27, 2002 - Jun 30, 2002
10am - 5pm

In support of the newly opened museum’s mission, the exhibition displayed the works of Georgia artists juxtaposed with sculpture, painting and prints by nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artists. Three curators selected work for the exhibition and contributed critical essays to the catalogue: Gudmund Vigtel, Director Emeritus, High Museum of Art; John Howett, Professor Emeritus, Emory University; and Laura Lieberman, Co-Founding Editor of Art Papers and currently Development Director, Robert C. Williams American Museum of Papermaking.

Excerpt from Howett Essay:

“These artists, both regional and national, were exhibited at the Heath Gallery before they became more familiar to the Atlanta public. Today many of the rather large number of Atlanta’s academic, municipal, and commercial galleries support the same healthy mix of both national and local contemporary artists. The basis for this important development, and its companion growth of critical writing, was formed by David Heath and a few other early strivers for the art of the city. The scale of activity has grown greatly since the seventies and eighties, but the quality of what David Heath and the Heath Gallery produced in this period has not been excelled.”
