Radcliffe Bailey b. November 1968 in Bridgeton, New Jersey |
Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey was born in New Jersey in 1968. He received a BFA from The Atlanta College of Art, and has grown in national notoriety since then. Much of Bailey's work begins with vintage sepia-tone photographs of African-Americans from decades past; many of which were given to him by his grandmother. Bailey works them into mixed-media collages on wood or canvas that incorporate other found objects and bands of bright color. In 1994 Bailey was invited to participate in Equal Rights & Justice, a group exhibition at the High Museum in Atlanta and in 1997 was included in As Time Goes By: History, Memory, and Sentimentality, a group exhibition at the Stamford, Connecticut branch of New York's Whitney Museum. Bailey’s solo and group exhibitions have been reviewed by numerous publications including The New York Times, ArtNEWS, and Art in America. In a 1996 interview with Vibe Magazine's Kevin Powell, Bailey stated, "I'm like free jazz. I'm not concerned about where I'm going, just as long as I'm moving forward and documenting life." Work by Bailey is on permanent display in Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport, owned by prominent collector and Georgia resident, Sir Elton John, and included in numerous other collections, including the MOCA GA permanent collection. Bailey was also featured as one of twenty-seven artists in the recent Georgia Council for the Arts publication: “Georgia Masterpieces: Selected Works from Georgia Museums” and the MOCA GA exhibition it inspired, Twenty Georgia Masters. |
