Phillip Carpenter

b. February 1950 in Ashford, Alabama

 

Philip Carpenter is an Atlanta artist who holds a BFA in drawing and painting from Auburn University, and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Alabama.  He has been a painting instructor at Chastain Arts Center in Atlanta since 1980, teaching varying ranges of skill levels while working on his own art.  Carpenter’s work has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the LaGrange National XXI Biennial, Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum; the 1994 Atlanta Biennial, Nexus Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta; and most recently his work was featured in Philip Carpenter: Hambidge Center Drawings at the Berse Gallery, Chastain Art Center, Atlanta.  Carpenter was the recipient of a 2001 Hambidge Center Fellowship, a Artist’s Project Grant from the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs in 1995, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1988.  His work is represented in many public and private collections, including Auburn University, Alabama; Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina; The State of Georgia Collection, Atlanta; The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa; King and Spalding, Atlanta; and The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.
