Maria Artemis

b. April 1945 in Greensboro, North Carolina

 

Maria Artemis was born in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1945.  She received a BA from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia; a MFA from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA; and an MS in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.  Artemis has had several solo exhibitions, most recently as an award winner of the 2008/2009 Working Artist Project she exhibited: Events that Rhyme at MOCA GA. Her work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions, including the Southeastern Invitational at Columbia Museum of Art, SC; The Avant Garde Revisited, Nexus Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta; Contemporary Artists in Georgia, High Museum of Art; and City on a Hill, Twenty Years of Artists in Cortona, a traveling exhibition at The Georgia Museum of Art, in Athens, GA; Palazzo Casali, Cortona, Italy, and Church of San Stae, Venice, Italy.  Artemis is the recipient of many awards and grants, including a Georgia Women in the Visual Arts Award, a Mayor’s Fellowship in the Arts Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a Ford Foundation Grant.  Her work is held in MOCA GA’s permanent collection, and numerous private and public collections. Artemis was also featured in MOCA GA’s 2005 exhibition Accelerating Sequence: Artists Observe Time and Aging. Recently completed public works include, the Donald Lee Hollowell Memorial Water Park in Center Hill Park, commissioned by the City of Atlanta Office of Parks and Recreation; an entry fountain for the Northside Hospital Women’s Health Center in Forsyth, GA; and Poiesis, an architectural component of the new LEED certified Hamilton Mill Library in Gwinnett County. Artemis was also featured as one of twenty-seven artists in the recent Georgia Council for the Arts publication: “Georgia Masterpieces: Selected Works from Georgia Museums” and the MOCA GA exhibition it inspired, Twenty Georgia Masters.
