Betty Edge b. Columbia, South Carolina |
b. Columbia, South Carolina |
Betty Edge is an Atlanta photographer who works in both color and black and white, creating intensely observed still lifes that spring from a lifelong passion for flowers. Her work is a contemporary expression of an age-old tradition in Western art, using flowers as allusion and metaphor. With the help of a macro lens, Edge avoids mere description, seeking instead the underlying architecture and revealing the mystery and the poignant transience of beauty in the details of a single stem or blossom. Betty Edge studied photography at the Showcase School, Atlanta, the Atlanta College of Art, and the Callanwolde Center for the Arts. She had her first solo exhibition at the Showcase School in the spring of 2004. This was followed by the group shows, In the Details, October-November, 2004, and Three Photographers, October-November, 2005, both at Thomas Deans Fine Art, and a group exhibition at Schledler-Minchin Gallery in Birmingham, Alabama. Other exhibitions include Emerging Visions, curated by Jerry Cullum for the Atlanta Photography Group; The Essence of Nature, curated by Marianne Lambert for the Swan Coach House Gallery; and the Atlanta Photography Group exhibition Fay Gold Selects all in 2003. She has also had the following solo exhibitions: Edge on Metal at Thomas Deans Fine Art, Atlanta in May, 2007 and a solo exhibition at the Georgia State Botanical Gardens, Athens in autumn of 2007. |
