Amalia Amaki

b. July 8, 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia

Amalia Amaki is an artist and educator who received her PhD and MA from  Emory University, and her BA in photography and painting from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. About her work Amaki says, ”My work capitalizes on a long time interest in film and advertising and its impact on self-perception and notions about others”. Drawing from such sources as blues music, photography, familial history, and American heritage, Amaki’s work challenges traditional views of African-American culture and focuses on positive images of African- American life – love, loyalty, pride, and strength. Amaki has taught art history in colleges all over the southern United States as well as the University of Delaware and has been in numerous major exhibitions across the world including a mid-career retrospective solo exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. in 2006. Amaki was also featured as one of twenty-seven artists in the recent Georgia Council for the Arts publication: Georgia Masterpieces: Selected Works from Georgia Museums and the MOCA GA exhibition it inspired, "Twenty Georgia Masters".
